About Oristano

Oristano (Sardinian Aristanis) is an Italian city  with about 32,000 inhabitants and the capital city of Oristano is located in the Central West of Sardinia. 

It is situated in the northern plain of Campidano, region called  Campidano of Oristano. Established province on the 16th July 1974, but has an ancient history, particularly related to the judge of Arborea and the figure of Eleanor.

The Gulf of Oristano is an inlet of the Sea of Sardinia, located in west-central Sardinia, which takes its name from the city and, together with that of Alghero, is a major gulf between the west coast.
It is bordered on the north by Cape San Marco, in the Sinis  Peninsula, and south from Cape Frasca, and washes the provinces of Oristano (common Cabras, Oristano, Santa  Giusta, Arborea and Terralba) and Middle Campidano (common Guspini and Arbus).

Extends in front of the same Oristano town.  It is bordered by two mountain promontories either side, while the central part has a lower and regular cost.

Near the bay there are numerous ponds, such as Stagno di  Cabras, Stagno di Mystras and lo Stagno di Santa Giusta that have plenty of wildlife and scenic areas of interest.

The main activities of the Bay are:  fishing, fish farming and manufacturing activities related to the fish market, with particular reference to the production of bottarga (grey mullet dry egs), tourism is  concentrated in the town of San Giovanni di Sinis, Marina di Torre Grande, Putzu Idu, Is Benas and il Lido di Arborea. Overlooking the bay the famous archaeological site of Tharros, and in the immediate vicinity of Oristano is the mouth of the Tirso, the longest river in Sardinia.
